CONTERFEIT GOD

Most of us don’t practice a religion where we physically bow down to a statue. The idea of idol worship is a bit foreign to us. But I think we would all agree that idol worship is alive and well in our culture. Our shrines may look different, but they are still places of worship where we go to make sacrifices in the hopes of securing the good life. The Ten Commandments begin with these words, “You shall have no other God’s before me.” Let’s explore several characters in scripture that trusted in Counterfeit Gods and see if we discover our own idols.

Seven Signs

John wrote the Gospel that bears his name with the object that his readers might come to a fuller understanding of the person of Jesus Christ. And John planned his Gospel around seven miracles which Jesus performed. These seven miracles are all described by John as "SIGNS". "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." John 20:30-31

THE ME I WANT TO BE

We often treat spiritual growth like a training plan that only the most disciplined, are spiritually minded can attain.  Yet Jesus invites each of us to a life that is found in Him.  And that He partners with us to make us MORE of who we really are… IN HIM.  Not becoming someone we’re not… but the ME HE MADE US TO BE.

start> Becoming a Good Samaritan

A World in crisis... besieged by Poverty, Pandemic Diseases, Social Injustice, Racism, Inequality and Political Oppression…

What impact could 77 million American Christians have on these problems? How different would our world be if the Church of Jesus Christ became the strongest voice on these issues? Why don’t more Christians get personally involved?

It could be that we’ve become paralyzed by the enormity of the problem. Or worse, maybe we’ve become so caught up in our own busy, busy lives that our brain shuts out everything not on our “to do” list – including the Good Samaritan opportunities right in front of us!

Whatever the reason, when we’re faced with the reality of committing ourselves to being the hands and feet of Christ to a hurting world, we get stopped at the most critical point on the journey… the beginning!

The Promise

Lots of people can predict future events, but there is no guarantee the prediction will come true. In fact, most man-made predictions will not come true.

God promised that He would send a Savior to pay the price for our sins and bring us back to Him. It began in the Garden of Eden and continued to be spoken through prophets in the Old Testament.

We will look together in this two part series at how this unfolded. In the first part (March 15-29) we will look at one chapter in the prophecy of Isaiah to understand God’s heart and plan for sending His Son. In the second part (Holy Week) we will reflect and celebrate Jesus fulfilling His call as Messiah and what it means for us today.

All In

We are living in a time of great confusion and great turmoil. We are questioning our futures, our security and the “better life” that we have dreamed of. In a time of economic uncertainty and fear… what is the Biblical response to how we handle our resources? Will we spread out our resources in many ways to protect them, believing that if this way fails perhaps another sources will bring us through… will we do all that we can to protect and prevent loss of our stuff or will we be ALL IN with our trust and faith in God’s provision, direction and heart with our resources?

Losing My Religion

Sometimes Church can be an adventure in missing the point when it becomes all about rules and not about relationship. It’s easy to lose sight of the essence of our faith.

Early Christianity struggled to move from law to grace and from religion to relationship with God. Many of our early Christian writings tell about a unique time in history when Christianity made the transition from a small band of Jews who began to believe Jesus was truly the one sent by God to a global movement that spread to every language and culture in the Roman Empire. If religion is just a set of beliefs and practices then it’s not really the “good news” that Jesus came to bring.

Come and lose your religion and in the process find a relationship with God that brings freedom, joy, and transformation.

Jesus For President

Whatever your political persuasion there has been a consistent theme this campaign season…change. Everyone wants change, but the big question is how. The political climate in Jesus’ day was similar. People were starving for change, and the politics and religion of the day only left people emptier. Jesus brought a revolutionary message and a compelling life that backed up the words he spoke. Come and hear Jesus’ vision for the world and then decide for yourself if you want to join the revolution.

Be...

Every major religion has their own version of the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Mat 7:12 It’s a great place to start, but its weakness lies in its vagueness. Jesus spent a great deal of time unpacking the specific implications of the Golden Rule in the Sermon on the Mount, summarizing his suggestions in his Beatitudes.

The Beatitudes seem to hit the mark in its counter-intuitive approach to living. Instead of doing what the world says you should do “Look out for number one” and “It’s all about me”, try doing the opposite. The deal is this, if we are to become the blessed people Jesus speaks of in the Beatitudes, we will be lead to love and accept those around us.

But what is it to have God gain the monopoly in our lives? What if he had exclusive control of everything? How might that impact our earning, spending, saving and especially giving? What would it look like if we tapped into the infinite wisdom of the God who gets it financially? What if we simply followed His principles? What if He were to achieve a monopoly in our lives?
